IBM improves density of new Flex System servers
IBM has introduced x86 and Power processors with a new dual-chip server module that will help speed the deployment of cloud and virtualized environments. The Flex System servers, announced Tuesday, are based on a new board design in which two blade-type motherboards are combined into one server package, which can then be slotted into one socket. That effectively doubles the processors, memory, storage and other hardware resources available per socket. Read More

AARP website hacked
AARP, formerly known as the American Association of Retired Persons, has emailed its members, warning that the AARP website has been hacked. Those of us who have been following many website breaches know that break-in news tends to go from bad to worse. It is not at all clear how AARP discovered the hack, or how the organization can state, definitively, that "no passwords, financial or sensitive personal data was obtained." Read More

Clouds are backing up clouds, with more choices on tap
Enterprises that rely on cloud-based services are getting more options for falling back on another cloud if necessary. On Tuesday, Nasuni introduced a cloud-to-cloud mirroring option to give customers extra assurance that their data will be available in case of a service outage. The same day, cloud-to-cloud backup vendor Backupify added more choices for where users can have their data sent. Read More

With no updated iPads on sale, tablet sales slip 10% in Q2
Nearly 10 percent fewer tablets of all brands shipped in the second quarter compared to the first, with Apple's iPad line showing the biggest decline -- a 25 percent slide, IDC said today.iPad shipments totaled just 14.6 million in the quarter, down from 19.6 million in the previous quarter. That decline was attributed to the fact that Apple did not offer any iPad updates this spring. New iPads launched before the second quarter in years past have traditionally helped both Apple and its competitors, IDC noted. Read More
