Researchers spot new breed of infected Android apps in the wild
Cyber criminals are successfully using a recently found Master Key vulnerability to inject malicious code into legitimate Android apps without invalidating their digital signatures. The code enables the attacker to remotely take control of infected devices, steal sensitive data, send texts, and disable select security applications using root commands. Read More

Apple's developer site overhaul continues following breach
Apple is incrementally restoring its developer systems following an intrusion last week the company said may have divulged personal information about registered users. The company created a new status page listing the various functions of its developer site, which is used to aid programmers in creating applications. Read More

Forget the high margins, Apple -- cut iPad Mini prices
Apple sold 14 percent fewer iPads in the quarter that ended June 30 than during the same stretch in 2012, while the revenue it earned from those sales plummeted by 27 percent. Analysts tied the decline in revenue to the iPad Mini, Apple's smaller, lower-priced tablet that has significantly cannibalized sales of the pricier, 9.7-inch original. But ironically, they urged Apple to reduce prices of the Mini even more. Read More

Amazon Web Services files complaint over CIA contract
Amazon Web Services has filed a complaint in a U.S. court after the Government Accountability Office sustained in part a protest by IBM against the award of a contract by the CIA for a cloud computing project. IBM had challenged the evaluation of proposals and the selection decision in the award of the CIA contract for commercial cloud services to AWS in Seattle. Read More

MediaTek to launch a 'true' 8-core chip in Q4
Smartphone and tablet chip vendor MediaTek has unveiled an octo-core processor it says can run all eight cores simultaneously when active. The Taiwan-based company plans to launch the chip in the fourth quarter, MediaTek spokeswoman Sharon Lo said Thursday. Read More
