Microsoft kills TechNet, but the fate of its software licenses is murky
The feast is over for developers, system admins, and other IT pros who've used the TechNet Subscription service to gorge on all-you-can-eat access to Microsoft technologies. The company announced it's ending the TechNet service and directing the community toward alternatives such as the TechNet Evaluation Center, the Microsoft Virtual Academy, and TechNet Forums. But it isn't at all clear if TechNet licenses -- the ones users have already bought 'n paid for -- will live beyond TechNet's demise. Read More

AT&T iPad hacker appeals conviction, long sentence
A U.S. man prosecuted for exposing a weakness in how AT&T handled the personal data of its iPad users filed an appeal on Monday of his conviction and 41-month sentence. Andrew Auernheimer, known as "weev," created an automated tool to extract the names and email addresses of 114,000 iPad 3G owners from AT&T's servers, which were used by customers to access their accounts. The information was later passed to the online news site Gawker. Read More

Windows 8 finally passes Vista in OS market share
Microsoft's Windows 8 is now a more popular operating system than the reviled Windows Vista, eliminating a source of embarrassment as Microsoft's latest OS slowly continues to gather steam. According to Net Applications' NetMarketshare tracker, Windows 8 captured 5.10 percent of all desktop systems the firm tracks for the month of June. Vista's market share now stands at 4.62 percent. Of course, both will need a few months (or years) before they pass Windows XP and Windows 7, both of which dipped about half a percentage point's worth of share to finish the month with 44.37 percent and 37.17 percent, respectively.
