Windows 'Blue': Microsoft blows it
If you like Windows 8, you'll like -- maybe even love -- Windows 8.1 "Blue." But if you're a denizen of the old-fashioned Desktop world, without a yearning for touch and/or you don't want your PC to act like a smartphone, Windows 8.1 will disappoint -- big time. Last week, Microsoft invited several members of the press for an on-the-record two-hour demo of Windows 8.1, code-named "Blue." Microsoft rushes out early-bird release of Visual Studio 2013
Microsoft is breaking with its traditional two-year release cycle for its Visual Studio software development platform, with the introduction Monday of Visual Studio 2013 less than a year after the release of Visual Studio 2012. Featuring capabilities for cloud-based load testing, team development, and devops, Visual Studio 2013 is due in a preview release form in a few weeks, with the general release expected at the end of the year. Ballmer reportedly reorganizing Microsoft
Earlier this morning, Kara Swisher at AllThingsD filed a report quoting unnamed "sources close to the situation" saying that Ballmer is zeroing in on a restructuring of his Byzantine management chart. Much has changed since I last looked at the Microsoft Game of Thrones in November; so many top execs have left the company since then that it's a whole new ballgame. Read More

China surpasses U.S. with 54.9-petaflop supercomputer
China has produced a supercomputer capable of 54.9 petaflops, more than twice the speed of any system in the U.S., according to a U.S. researcher who was in China last week and learned the details. China's latest system was built with Intel chips, but includes indigenously produced Chinese technologies as well. The Chinese government spent about $290 million on it. Read More

Google nixes Glass facial recognition due to privacy concerns
Google will not be adding facial recognition software to its futuristic-looking computerized eyeglasses at this point due to privacy concerns. The company announced late Friday that Glass won't include facial recognition technologies. Google said it decided against adding the capability due to privacy concerns voiced by users. Read More

IE10 steals user share from IE9, jumps 53 percent
Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE10) boosted its user share last month by 53 percent as the company's enforced upgrade for Windows 7 continued to take effect. IE10 increased its user share of all copies of IE from 10.8 percent to a record 16.5 percent in May, growing at a faster pace than the month before, according to metrics company Net Applications.
