Android, Chrome loom large over Google I/O's opening day
Google at its upcoming Google I/O 2013 conference has blocked out three hours -- including a break -- for its opening-day keynote. Precisely what the company will discuss during that marathon session on May 15 remains under wraps, although the company concedes it will involve news across Google's major platforms or services. What that could mean is the unveiling of Android 5.0, also referred to as the "Key Lime Pie" version of the mobile platform, but published reports speculate that this release could be delayed. The "Jelly Bean" line may be continued, instead. Rumors have also circulated that Google might unify its Android and Chrome technologies. Read More

Salesforce.com to ship Communities app in June
Salesforce.com next month will begin shipping its Communities application, designed to let companies build external-facing social sites for interacting with their customers and partners. Communities uses the technology in Salesforce.com's Chatter application, which is designed for building enterprise social networks for internal employee collaboration. Read More

D-Link publishes beta patches for IP surveillance camera vulnerabilities
D-Link has published beta patches for vulnerabilities in the firmware of many of its IP surveillance cameras, which could allow a hacker to intercept a video stream. The company said on its support forum that it will publish a full release of the upgraded firmware within a month. Some of D-Link's consumer IP cameras in its Cloud product line will automatically receive the updates. Read More

Intel's Haswell laptop chip gets massive graphics performance boost
Intel is expected to announce its fourth-generation Core processors code-named Haswell for laptops and desktops in June, but the company is already releasing teasers that talk about their performance. The Haswell laptop chip will deliver up to twice the graphics performance compared to third-generation Core processors code-named Ivy Bridge, according to a slide deck released by Intel on Wednesday. The company is claiming graphics performance improvement of close to three times for Haswell desktop chips. Read More

AMD thinks beyond PCs with new custom chip business unit
Armed with a contract to build chips for Sony's PlayStation 4 gaming console, Advanced Micro Devices has now officially established a custom-chip business unit in an effort to break away from its heavy reliance on the slumping PC market. AMD is staking its future on the custom-chip business, which will use the company's intellectual property to make specialized hardware for computing devices like tablets, consumer electronics like gaming consoles and high-performance computers.
