A violent cellphone crime wave sweeps the US
On Feb. 27 in the middle of the afternoon, a 16-year-old girl was walking through San Francisco's Mission District when she was ordered at gunpoint to hand over her cellphone. The robbery was one of 10 serious crimes in the city that day, and they all involved cellphones. Three were stolen at gunpoint, three at knifepoint, and four through brute force. Read More

Networks in 2020: More traffic, less energy
Networks could use far less energy by 2020 even though they'll be carrying much more traffic, an industry group says. The GreenTouch consortium, formed in 2010 to speed up progress on more efficient networks, says it has identified technologies that together could cut network power needs by 90 percent even in the face of rapidly growing data demand. The group of equipment vendors, component makers and service providers will present that conclusion in a report due in mid-June. Read More

Yahoo acquires Loki Studios as part of acquisition spree
Yahoo has acquired a mobile gaming company, Loki Studios, taking its total acquisitions this month to four. The company said over the weekend it welcomed Loki, Astrid, GoPollGo, and MileWise to its growing mobile team. "We recently added 22 entrepreneurs to our growing mobile team," the company said in a Twitter message in a possible reference to some of the people from the four companies who have moved to Yahoo. Why Microsoft won't charge for Windows 'Blue'
Sometime in the coming weeks, Microsoft will tell Windows 8 users whether they will have to pay for the upgrade code-named "Blue," and if so, how much.
