Red Hat, Mirantis, and Hortonworks unite behind Hadoop on OpenStack
Red Hat, OpenStack startup Mirantis, announced today at the OpenStack Summit that they are throwing resources behind Project Savanna, which is aimed at delivering the Hadoop Big Data engine atop the OpenStack cloud platform. The goal of the open-source endeavor is to enable OpenStack users to easily provision and manage elastic Hadoop clusters on the cloud platform for such purposes as delivering "analytics as a service" for ad-hoc or bursty analytic workloads, similar to Amazon Web Services' Elastic MapReduce. Google discloses tech specs and developer API for Glass
The Google Glass wearable computer will have a high-resolution display equivalent of a 25-inch high-definition screen from eight feet away, and will capture 5-megapixels images and video at a resolution of 720p, according to technical specs disclosed on Monday. The device will also support Wi-Fi compliant with 802.11b/g standards and Bluetooth, and has 12GB of usable memory, synced with Google cloud storage. It has 16GB flash memory in total. Read More

Google search manipulation starves some websites of traffic
Google's placement of its own flight-finding service in search results is resulting in lower click-through rates for companies that have not bought advertising, according to a study by Harvard University academics. The study shows an 80 percent drop in algorithmic traffic to five online travel agencies, while click-through rates for paid advertising jumped 160 percent. Read More

Symantec report finds small businesses battered by cyber crime
Cyber criminals are increasingly targeting small businesses due to their less sophisticated defenses, according to a new report from Symantec. Companies with 250 employees or less absorbed 18 percent of targeted cyber attacks in 2011, but the figure jumped to 31 percent in 2012, Symantec said in its Internet Security Threat Report 2013, released on Tuesday.
