Google Chrome team explains what shift to Blink means for Web developers
The Google Chrome team threw Web developers for a loop in announcing it is dumping WebKit in favor of a new browser engine dubbed Blink. The announcement came in near lockstep with Mozilla's declaration that it had teamed up with Samsung to create a new browser engine called Servo, built on Rust. Opera, meanwhile, announced that it too would shift to Blink (rather than WebKit). The winds of change are blowing through the browser world, and developers are understandably concerned. Read More

Oracle brings data center fabric to Sparc systems
Oracle has extended its data center fabric to its Sparc-based Unix platforms, promising to let enterprises tie more servers and applications into the high-speed infrastructure. The fabric technology, which Oracle acquired in its purchase of startup Xsigo Systems last year, connects servers and storage over Ethernet and InfiniBand and allows for thousands of virtual network interfaces. That saves IT departments from having to install multiple network interface cards and host bus adapters in its physical servers, while tying together the resources in the data center at speeds up to 80Gbps. Twitter provides access to mobile apps from within tweets
Twitter's in-the-moment stream of quick comments and links might seem tailor-made for those with short attention spans, but the company is rolling out changes that will make tweets more interactive, including the ability to access mobile apps from inside a tweet. The changes were presented to developers on Tuesday evening and will be supported in updates to Twitter's Android and iPhone apps that were announced Wednesday, as well as in updates to mobile.twitter.com and Twitter's main desktop service. Businesses, privacy activists wrestle over California privacy bill
Businesses and privacy advocates are squaring off over a proposed law that would make California the first state in the nation to give people the right to see all the information companies have on them and to find out who the data is shared with. Groups such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the American Civil Liberties Union say California Assembly bill AB 1291 would help consumers decide whether they wanted to continue doing business with a company, based on the way it handled their personal information. BlackBerry to discontinue BBM Music service by June
BlackBerry will discontinue its BBM Music service on June 2, and is referring current customers to the Rdio music service for 30 days of free music. The company said that after a strategic business review, it was decided that BlackBerry will no longer develop or provide support for BBM Music. Read More

Bitcoin storage service suffers database attack
An online bitcoin storage service, Instawallet, said it is accepting claims for stolen bitcoins after the company's database was fraudulently accessed. Instawallet didn't say in a notice on its website how many bitcoins were stolen. The virtual currency has surged in value in the past couple of months due to rising interest. At one point Wednesday, a bitcoin sold for more than $140. Read More
