Thousands petition Google not to kill off Reader
Over 28,000 users of Google Reader have signed a new online petition imploring Google not to pull the plug on Google Reader. The company announced just yesterday that it was going to cut several services, including Google Reader, GUI Builder, and Cloud Connect as part of its ongoing effort to focus on products that will yield profit. The newest round of cuts brings the list of abandoned services and features to 70, according to Urs Hölzle, senior VP of technical infrastructure at Google Read More

Java's security problems unlikely to be resolved soon, researchers say
Since the start of the year, hackers have been exploiting vulnerabilities in Java to carry out a string of attacks against companies including Microsoft, Apple, Facebook, and Twitter, as well as home users. Oracle has made an effort to respond faster to the threats and to strengthen its Java software, but security experts say the attacks are unlikely to let up any time soon. Read More

Researchers resurrect and improve CRIME attack against SSL
Two researchers from security firm Imperva have devised new techniques that could allow attackers to extract sensitive information from users' encrypted Web traffic. The new methods build on those used in an attack called CRIME (Compression Ratio Info-leak Made Easy) revealed last year that abuses the compression feature of SSL to achieve the same goal. BlackBerry extends Balance dual-personality features to Android, iOS
BlackBerry today announced technology designed to securely separate work and personal data on Android and iOS smartphones and tablets, as its Balance software does for new BlackBerry 10 devices. The new Secure Work Space for iOS and Android will be sold separately to run as an update to BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10. A closed beta test recently began with enterprise and government customers; the software will be generally available by June 30, officials said. Pricing has not been announced. Read More

Twitter for Windows 8 released
Twitter has released an app for Windows 8, with several features designed specifically for the new operating system from Microsoft. The company said the app features two Windows charms for searching and making posts on Twitter. The search feature is similar to existing Twitter apps, allowing users to find specific accounts or filter by hashtags, while the other allows them to make posts using photos or text from a separate app. Read More
