Data breach exposes Energy Department's 'continuing story of negligence'
The U.S. Department of Energy has admitted that unidentified malicious hackers successfully breached 14 of its servers and 20 of its workstations two weeks ago, making off with personal information belonging to several hundred employees. The department's assurances that "no classified data was compromised" come as little comfort, however, considering the department's spotty security history. Read More

IBM brings Watson technologies to entry-level Power servers
IBM's Watson supercomputer outperformed humans in the televised game show "Jeopardy." Now the company is moving some of its underlying technologies from the supercomputer into new entry-level servers. The company's new Power Express servers announced on Tuesday will integrate some hardware and software elements derived from Watson. The servers start at $5,947, and IBM is targeting the new products at businesses with over 100 employees. Read More

iOS 6 untethered jailbreak released, Cydia app store flooded
Apple modders can rejoice: The latest jailbreak software for iOS 6 was released on Monday. The jailbreak is the result of months of work by a four-man computer security research team called the "Evad3rs." They probed Apple's latest OS to find a string of vulnerabilities that would allow an untethered jailbreak, or one that can be installed without the device being connected to a computer. Read More

MySQL 5.6 tackles NoSQL competitors
With MySQL 5.6, released Tuesday, Oracle has updated the open-source database to make it more competitive with NoSQL data stores such as MariaDB or Cassandra. Oracle hopes MySQL can offer NoSQL speeds and scalability while still being a fully relational database. Read More
