Tech companies claim more H-1B visas will fill IT labor gap
Microsoft, HP, Intel, Cisco, and Oracle are among the heavyweight IT companies throwing their support behind proposed legislation that would nearly double the number of H-1B visas the feds could dole out each year, from 65,000 to 115,000. The Immigration Innovation Act of 2013 (I-Squared, for short) would funnel some of the money from H-1B-related fees toward funding STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education in U.S. schools and colleges and retraining workers. Microsoft to big data programmers: Try F#
The F# (pronounced "f sharp") object-oriented functional programming language originated at Microsoft Research around 2004. It was designed by Don Syme, principal researcher at the company. The language is geared to data-oriented programming as well as parallel programming and algorithmic development. F# 3.0, featuring support for large-scale schematized data and APIs, was released last year along with an update to Visual F# tools in Microsoft's Visual Studio 2012 IDE; Microsoft recently updated its Try F# website, which provides tools and resources for using F#, as well. Apple software hackers unveiled a website late Wednesday where the latest untethered jailbreak is expected to be released soon. An elite team of hackers has been working for months to develop an untethered jailbreak for iOS 6, Apple's latest operating system, which would allow users to customize their phones and install applications not vetted by Apple. Jailed for jailbreaking: The new law could land you in the slammer
A group of hackers going by the name "evad3rs" just announced that on Sunday, Feb. 3, it will release an untethered jailbreak for iOS 6.1 on the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad Mini, iPad 4, iPad 3, iPad 2, iPod Touch 4G, iPod Touch 5G, AppleTv 2G and, possibly, the AppleTv 3G. In the U.S. there is, however, a new legal issue that makes jailbreaking potentially a huge risk: Once a cellphone is jailbroken it can be "unlocked," meaning it can be used with any carrier, and that has just become a crime. Critical vulnerability affects latest VLC media player
Versions 2.0.5 and earlier of the popular VLC media player software contain a critical vulnerability that can be potentially exploited by attackers to execute malicious code on computers. The vulnerability is located in the VLC component responsible for playing ASF (Advanced Streaming Format) video files, VideoLAN, the non-profit organization that develops the media player, said in a security advisory published on its website.
