Microsoft patents tech that would silence your phone for you
Microsoft has patented a technology called "Inconspicuous Mode," a setting that could put a mobile device into a stealth-like mode in response to, say, the lights going out in a movie theater. That way, you remain reachable on your phone without disrupting the guy beside you weeping during the "Les Miserables." It's an interesting technology, as described in the patent authored by Jordan Naftolin -- but it also may be one to add to the list of mobile technologies that are kinda cool and kinda creepy. Cloud app dev saves developers 1 hour of every 8
Developers are finding that building applications in the cloud saves time, but concerns remain about security and uptime, according to a newly released study. Results of the biannual Evans Data Cloud Development Survey, conducted in December and released earlier this month, found that cloud platforms reduce overall development time by an average of 11.6 percent. "The bottom line is these data appear to show that time savings -- efficiency -- is one of the key motivators that is driving the adoption of the cloud among developers," said Ben Hanley, Evans senior analyst. Read the fine print before downgrading to Windows 7
Microsoft's licensing terms are rarely simple -- as legions of you and your legal departments will attest. Oracle patches latest zero-day vulnerabilities in Java
Oracle released two out-of-band patches on Sunday for vulnerabilities in its Java programming language, both of which pose a high risk to users browsing the Web. The company's speed in issuing patches may be due to part that exploit code for at least one of the vulnerabilities, CVE-2013-0422, has already been wrapped into two "exploit kits" or packages of attack code inserted into websites that already have other vulnerabilities. Microsoft to release emergency Internet Explorer patch on Monday
Microsoft will release a patch on Monday for older versions of its Internet Explorer browser, deviating from its normal repair schedule due to the seriousness of the problem. The vulnerability, which is present in IE 6, 7, and 8, is a memory corruption issue. It can be exploited by an attacker via a drive-by download, a term for loading a website with attack code that delivers malware to a victim's computer if the person merely visits the website.
