Earlier this week I posted detailed instructions on how to "downgrade" (I use the term advisedly) a Windows 8 Pro machine to Windows 7 Professional. Microsoft explicitly gives permission for this downgrade. The steps are lengthy, but not particularly difficult for an experienced Windows user who's accustomed to clean installs. 5 new smartphone OSes bet on HTML5 and improved UIs
In the next 12 months, smartphones with five new operating systems are scheduled to go on sale, leaning on Web technologies and improved user interfaces to try and make a dent in the dominance of Apple's iOS and Google's Android. In two weeks, Research In Motion will launch the first two smartphones based on its new operating system, BlackBerry 10, hoping to turn around its ailing fortunes. Launching a new operating system and succeeding will be difficult, but that hasn't dissuaded RIM nor the other vendors coming out with smartphone OSes the year: Mozilla, Canonical, Finnish upstart Jolla, and backers of Tizen. U.S. Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz said Wednesday that prosecutors recognized that there was no evidence against Internet activist Aaron Swartz that warranted severe punishment. Facebook pushes a new model for buying servers
Facebook has proposed a new model for designing servers that it says will give businesses more choice in selecting components and a smarter way to upgrade systems when needs change, though it remains to be seen how widely its method will be adopted. The social networking company is looking to "disaggregate" the data center, meaning it wants to reduce the dependencies among computer parts and make it easier for large companies to design the systems they need to suit their own particular workloads.
