Google to start charging small businesses for Google Apps
Google has ended a free version of its Google Apps online application suite for small businesses, saying it wants to provide a stronger and more uniform experience to users. The Internet giant said Thursday in a blog post that now even small businesses with 10 or fewer users will have to pay to use its online app platform, a group that up until now has been free. All businesses will now be charged $50 per user, per year, for the service. Read More

AMD slashes chip orders as PC market slumps
Advanced Micro Devices has cut orders to contract chip manufacturer GlobalFoundries, expecting a "choppy demand environment" in the next few quarters. The company said Thursday it has amended its wafer-supply agreement to cut its purchase of wafers from GlobalFoundries to about $115 million in the fourth quarter, and to $1.15 billion in fiscal 2013. AMD had previously contracted to buy $500 million in wafers in the fourth quarter from GlobalFoundries, said company spokesman Drew Prairie. Read More

8 out of 10 customers choose Windows 7, says PC builder
Given a choice, customers of a Pacific Northwest PC system builder overwhelming pick Windows 7 over the newer Windows 8, the company's president said Thursday. "Windows 7 is known, it has years of solid reputation behind it, but Windows 8 has gotten a mixed reaction in the press and social media, and the lack of a Start menu is a hot-button issue among our customers," said Jon Bach, president of Puget Systems, an Auburn, Wash. independent PC builder.
