Google Maps now available on iPhone
Google has made its Maps app available on the Apple App Store, after Apple stumbled with its own maps application. The Google Maps app was available from late Wednesday for Apple's iPhone and iPod touch. Apple, which had shipped Google's mapping application with the iOS operating system, replaced it with its own mapping application in the new version iOS 6 which was released in September. The application was however found to have glitches, which led Apple's CEO Tim Cook to apologize for the frustration caused to customers. Read More

Microsoft's Surface RT getting a tiny share of tablet Web traffic
Sales of the Microsoft Surface RT tablet are difficult to measure, but one study indicates it's only generating a tiny portion of Web traffic -- less than 1 percent. In fact, according to Chitika Insights, Surface RT tablets accounted for just 0.13 percent of all tablet Web traffic in the U.S. and Canada from Nov. 12 to 18.Chitika serves up Web ads to the Internet and measures how many users come to pages containing those ads. For its study about the Surface RT, Chitika looked at a sample of tens of millions of tablet "impressions" during the week involved. Read More

Vint Cerf: The Internet doesn't need the ITU's help
Work under way to draft new regulations at the World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT) in Dubai this week could harm the Internet, warned Internet pioneer and Google executive Vint Cerf. "The Internet is under threat" from proposals at the WCIT, Cerf said at the Usenix LISA (Large Installation System Administration) conference in San Diego on Wednesday. Read More

Oracle buys DataRaker for 'big data' analysis
Oracle is planning to buy DataRaker in a move that will give it a cloud-based platform for analyzing data from smart meters used by energy utilities. Terms of the deal, which was announced Thursday, weren't disclosed. Smart meters and the massive amounts of information they generate are frequently linked with the industry buzzword "big data," which typically refers to unstructured data formats. Oracle's pending acquisition of DataRaker ties into a broad movement by software vendors to sell products that customers can use to crunch these data sets for valuable insights. Read More

Lawsuit claims fake Android alerts tied to mystery charges
In one of the first lawsuits of its kind targeting an Android app maker and advertiser, a Colorado law firm has filed a class-action complaint against Colorado-based GoLive Mobile and California-based Airpush, alleging the two worked together to bilk Android phone users out of millions of dollars by paying for premium wireless services they never wanted. Attorneys claim GoLive and Airpush purposely tricked customers by creating mobile ads that looked like official Android system notifications. Read More
