Microsoft's Surface Pro's flawed two-for-one strategy
Microsoft's upcoming Surface Pro tablet sums up the company's seeming strategy with Windows 8: That business users can do with one device what they currently accomplish with two. But while Microsoft has called its approach "no compromise," the strategy is, in fact, rife with compromise. The Surface Pro -- officially, the name of the tablet is "Surface with Windows 8 Pro" -- is neither a tablet nor an Ultrabook, but bits of both. Read More

Slumping chip market may signal shift in tech industry
The worldwide chip market dropped from being labeled "stagnant" to "in a slump" this year, with one analyst firm downgrading its forecast to a level that puts the entire year in a decline. If the firm is correct, this would be the first annual decline for the global chip industry since 2009. Read More

AMD's new Opteron server chips target the cloud
To break its slump in the server market, Advanced Micro Devices is embarking on an aggressive strategy that calls for ARM and x86 chips by 2014 and continued improvements to its Opteron line in the meantime. The company on Tuesday introduced low-power Opteron processors, which are targeted for use in cloud servers that process Web transactions. The new Opteron 4300 and 3300 x86 server chips have up to eight cores and are targeted at entry-level and mid-range servers. The new chips provide performance and power consumption upgrades. Court orders patents in Apple-HTC deal to be made public
Apple's patent license agreement with HTC will not be put entirely under seal, except for the pricing and royalty terms, a court in California ordered in a patent infringement lawsuit between Samsung Electronics and Apple. The court ordered HTC last month to produce without delay an unredacted version of the agreement, after Samsung said it was relevant to its patent infringement dispute with Apple as it almost certainly covers at least some of the patents in the suit. New 'Dockster' malware targets Apple computers
A new piece of malicious software targeted at Apple users has been found on a website dedicated to the Dalai Lama, but one security vendor is labeling it as low risk. The malware, nicknamed "Dockster," is a backdoor that allows an attacker to control the victim's computer, record keystrokes, and export files, according to Intego, which sells security software for Macs.
