How Microsoft fudges Windows 8 sales figures I've seen a lot of "analyses" in the technical press about lousy early sales of Windows 8, however none to date are willing to put a number on Windows 8 sales or make a prediction for this quarter. The simple fact is that nobody knows anything about Windows 8 sales. Wait till January, the sages advise, and then we'll know more. But many of these folks seem to forget that we've seen these machinations before, and we're likely to know less about Windows 8 sales in January than we do now. Read More Microsoft's call for more H-1B visas and green cards draws ire Claiming the United States doesn't have enough skilled IT workers to meet American companies' increasing demands, Microsoft has called on the feds to issue 20,000 more H-1B visas and 20,000 additional green cards per year to help fill the gap. But the recommendation does not sit well with the Economic Policy Institute (EPI), which has accused Microsoft of fudging the labor numbers to create the illusion of a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) skills shortage. The EPI argues that opening the floodgates to IT talent from overseas will exacerbate STEM unemployment rates in the U.S. Read More U.S. trade agency to review ruling in Apple-Samsung dispute The U.S. International Trade Commission has decided to review an earlier decision that Apple did not infringe four patents of Samsung Electronics in its mobile devices including the iPhone and iPad. The ITC plans to discuss in the review issues relating to standards-essential patents, including whether an undertaking to license a patent on FRAND (fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory) precludes a ban on a product if it infringes the patent. Read More Hewlett-Packard Q4 results hit by $8.8 billion charge Hewlett Packard released its fourth-quarter financial results ahead of schedule Tuesday morning, including a charge for $8.8 billion related to its acquisition of U.K. software firm Autonomy. HP says the bulk of the charge, for impairment of goodwill and intangible assets, is "linked to serious accounting improprieties, disclosure failures and outright misrepresentations at Autonomy Corporation plc that occurred prior to HP's acquisition of Autonomy." Read More Windows Server 2012 now runs in Amazon's cloud Enterprises can now run Windows Server 2012 on the Amazon Web Services cloud, and take advantage of improved management features and new versions of IIS and the .Net framework. AWS isn't the only provider whose cloud can run Microsoft's new server operating system. The OS can already be installed on Microsoft's own Azure cloud and Rackspace also offers a number of different configurations on its platform. Read More
