Microsoft Surface users complain of Wi-Fi problems
Some users of Microsoft's new Surface tablet are complaining about connectivity issues that are preventing them from getting on the Internet, according to posts on Microsoft's Surface support forum. Microsoft started shipping the tablet on Oct. 25 and the first complaints appeared two days later. The thread is now 16 pages long, with users saying Wi-Fi issues are causing disruptions to movie streams, file downloads, and Web applications. Read More

Researchers claim performance fix for overused Wi-Fi points
Three researchers from North Carolina State University have developed a software protocol that better manages high traffic loads on a Wi-Fi router when too many users connect, the university said this week. The researchers' protocol, called WiFox, monitors the traffic and implements a "priority" mode when a router is in danger of being overloaded of traffic, according to the university. WiFox can be incorporated into routers as a software update. Read More

Android market share spikes to more than 72 percent in Q3
Smartphone and tablet buyers snapped up Android products five times more often than they chose Apple iOS devices during the third quarter, according to a new study from Gartner Research. The 122 million Android devices sold in the quarter represent 72 percent of worldwide mobile sales. By comparison, just 115 million devices in total were sold during the same time period in 2011. It's also a roughly 100 percent increase over Android's year-on-year figures. Read More

HP targets Proliant SL4500 server at distributed environments
Hewlett-Packard is taking a step away from traditional server design with the new Proliant SL4500 server, which mixes processing, networking, and storage units to optimize performance of applications like OpenStack and Hadoop. The Proliant SL4500 links processors with as many as 60 hard drives in a 4.3U rack chassis. The server is more dense and cost-effective than industry-standard servers when running applications in distributed computing environments that link storage, networking and processing units, said Daniel Bounds, director of product management at Hewlett-Packard.
