In a session at the company's Build developer's conference, Will Tschumy, a principal user experience advisor, confirmed that the nomenclature "Windows 8 Store app" was Microsoft's preferred label for the tile-based, touch-first programs it's betting will fuel the success of Windows RT, and to a lesser extent, Windows 8. Read More Splunk 5 offers fault-tolerant indexing for mission-critical applications The new version of the Splunk machine data search engine comes with a distributed indexing technology that could save storage costs for those customers running the software as a high-availability service. "The data that is being collected in Splunk is becoming more mission critical," said Sanjay Mehta, Splunk vice president of product marketing, explaining the need for distributed indexing. Read More ARM introduces 64-bit processors for phones, tablets, and servers ARM has introduced its first 64-bit Cortex-A50 series processor designs as the company tries to preserve its dominance in smartphones and tablets while catching up with Intel in servers. The new ARM processors, Cortex-A57 and Cortex-A53, deliver higher performance at either the same or lower power levels compared to ARM processors today, said Ian Forsyth, product manager at ARM. The improved performance is key with mobile devices handling applications such as video and servers processing an increasing number of Web transactions. Read More
