Linux 3.7 will be armed for ARM
For too long, Linux and ARM chips haven't lived in harmony. Sure, flavors of the open source operating system are demonstrably capable of running on ARM chips, but it's required programmers to build and tweak their code on a case-by-case basis. Last year, Linus Torvalds famously described "this whole ARM thing" as "a f*cking pain in the ass." Relief has arrived: The forthcoming Linux 3.7 kernel, due out in January, will feature multiplatform ARM code, meaning Linux will be capable of running on any and all ARM chips. Read More

Lenovo announces Windows 8, RT hybrid laptop/tablet devices
Lenovo on Tuesday announced a new range of Windows 8 and RT hybrid computing devices that can function as tablets or laptops. The devices include the IdeaPad Yoga 11, which is the company's first hybrid laptop/tablet with an ARM processor and Windows RT. The device has an 11.6-inch screen and a touchscreen that flips to become a tablet. The device weighs 1.27 kilograms, offers 13 hours of battery life and will become available in December starting at $799. Read More

A better reason not to use Huawei routers: Code from the '90s
Security researcher Felix "FX" Lindner has a more compelling reason to steer clear of routers from Huawei Technologies than fears about its ownership. Ballmer sees his bonus shrink, Netflix's Hastings leaves Microsoft board
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer saw his bonus shrink a little in 2012 while that of other Microsoft executives rose significantly, the software maker said Tuesday. Ballmer received a bonus payment of $620,000, about 91 percent of his target, the company said. Combined with a salary of $685,000 and other rewards, Ballmer received $1.3 million from Microsoft in its 2012 financial year. Read More

Microsoft Tuesday patched 20 vulnerabilities in Word, Office, Windows, SharePoint Server, SQL Server and other products in its portfolio, including a critical bug in the company's popular Word program and another already used to attack the company's own online services. Read More

'Pinkie Pie' hacker trips up Chrome at Hack in the Box
It appears the hacker known as "Pinkie Pie" produced the first Chrome vulnerability at the Hack In the Box conference on Wednesday, just ahead of the deadline for the competition this afternoon. Google security officials said they are in the process of verifying the vulnerability, which if valid, will net Pinkie Pie $60,000, the top reward for the second Pwnium competition held this year. The reward goes to someone who creates a full Chrome exploit using bugs only in Chrome itself. Read More
