Hackers exploit Skype API to infect Windows PCs
Cyber criminals are again using Skype to wreak havoc, according to Sophos's Naked Security blog. The worm they're using this time, a variant of Dorkbot, lets hackers take control of infected Windows PCs remotely via HTTP by exploiting the Skype API. From there, they send unsolicited instant messages along the lines of "lol is this your new profile pic?" followed by a URL. Clicking the link downloads a ZIP file containing malicious executable files, which Sophos has detected as Troj/Agent-YCW or Troj/Agent-YDC. Read More

IBM, AT&T team on cloud services
IBM has teamed with AT&T to offer secure shared cloud services to customers over private networks rather than the public Internet, the companies said Tuesday. The service to be delivered from early next year is targeted at clients worldwide who are deploying clouds that demand high levels of security and availability, and who often cite security as a key inhibitor to cloud computing adoption, the companies said in a statement. Akamai service adapts websites for mobile devices
Content delivery accelerator Akamai Techologies has launched a service for adapting websites to the device used to access them, which it says also simplifies the upgrade to IPv6. The service, Aqua Ion, has been shaped by the increasing diversity of devices used to access websites, and is composed of technologies Akamai has acquired and developed in-house. Read More

RSA aims to stop hackers with simple password-protection
RSA, the security division of EMC, today announced a security product intended to protect simple passwords stored within businesses for authentication purposes, by splitting these passwords in two pieces kept separately, in theory making it harder for hackers to get hold of them. Read More

AMD finally makes a tablet play with dual-core 'Hondo' chip
Advanced Micro Devices renewed its attempt to make an impact in the tablet market, this time with its new dual-core Z-60 chip which the company introduced on Tuesday. Beyond tablets, the new dual-core chip, code-named Hondo, could be used in hybrid PC-tablet devices. Many new devices such as HP's Envy X2 have screens that can pop out from a keyboard dock to become tablets. Read More

Windows 7 malware infection rate soars in 2012
Windows 7's malware infection rate climbed by as much as 182 percent this year, Microsoft said today. But even with that dramatic increase, Windows 7 remained two to three times less likely to fall to hacker attack than the aged Windows XP.Data from Microsoft's newest twice-yearly security report showed that in the second quarter of 2012, Windows 7 was between 33 percent and 182 percent more likely to be infected by malware than in the second quarter of 2011.
