Microsoft pounds one more nail into Windows XP's coffin
If you haven't gotten the message, Microsoft really, really wants the 11-year-old Windows XP dead and buried. The company previously said the forthcoming Office 2013 won't run on XP. Now it says buyers of Windows 8 Pro won't be able to legally apply that license to Windows XP, so they can't put Windows XP on a PC shipping with Windows 8 Pro. HP releases two beta versions of open source WebOS
Hewlett-Packard released two beta versions of its open source WebOS on Friday: one for developers that runs on the Ubuntu Linux desktop and one the OpenEmbedded development environment intended to help developers port WebOS to new devices. Read More

Apple takes aim at Samsung's Galaxy S III in amended patent complaint
Shortly after a major win against Samsung in a federal court in California, Apple added products including versions of the Samsung Galaxy S III in an amended patent infringement complaint before the court in a separate patent case against Samsung. In the amended complaint, Apple said Samsung's infringing products now include at least 21 new smartphones, media players, and tablets that Samsung has released beginning in August 2011 and continuing through August 2012. Rogue Microsoft Services Agreement email notifications lead to latest Java exploit
Hackers are distributing rogue email notifications about changes in Microsoft's Services Agreement to trick people into visiting malicious pages that use a recently circulated Java exploit to infect their computers with malware. Read More

Amazon makes storage service more Web-friendly
Amazon is adding a Cross-Origin Resource Sharing capability to its S3 Simple Storage Service, allowing developers to more easily build Web applications that access data stored in the company's cloud. Developers can now implement HTML5-based drag and drop uploads to Amazon S3, show upload progress, or update content, according to Amazon. Until now, developers needed to run a custom proxy server between their Web application and S3 to support these capabilities, which made it more complicated, it said. Read More

Browser plug-in, website warn Facebook users about data harvesting
Secure.me has developed a website and a browser plug-in designed to make Facebook users aware of the personal information that gets harvested by third-party applications. The App Advisor Security Network website has profiles on more than 500,000 third-party Facebook applications that describe the user data they collect, what actions they can take and whether they are considered unsafe. The application profiles also display user ratings. Read More
