Microsoft confirms hackers exploiting critical IE bug, promises patch
Microsoft on Monday issued a security advisory that confirmed in-the-wild attacks are exploiting an unpatched bug in Internet Explorer. The software maker is working on a fix. The advisory addressed the "zero-day" vulnerability -- meaning it was discovered and exploited before a patch was available -- that was found and disclosed by researcher Eric Romang over the weekend. On Monday, the Metasploit open-source penetration framework published an exploit module for the bug, putting pressure on Microsoft to act quickly. Read More

Apple keeps top spot in customer satisfaction
Apple retained the top spot in a survey released Tuesday by the American Consumer Satisfaction Index, which also found that the tablet market is spurring PC makers to improve the quality of their products. The satisfaction rate for computers, including tablets, was 86 percent among Apple users, which was a small drop compared to the 87 percent satisfaction rate last year, ACSI found. The high satisfaction rate among customers with iPad tablets kept Apple at the top, and with more people buying tablets generally, Windows PC makers are improving the quality of products to remain competitive. Motorola launches Razr i smartphone with 2GHz Intel Atom processor
Google-owned Motorola Mobility has launched its first smartphone with an Atom processor from Intel, the companies announced at an event in London on Tuesday. The Razr i is the first smartphone with a 2.0GHz Atom Z2460 processor: Existing Atom smartphones run at 1.6GHz. The faster clock speed will result in smoother browsing and better video performance, according to Eric Read, general manager for Intel's Mobile and Communications group. Read More

Samsung begins producing next-gen DRAM for mobile phones, tablets
Samsung Electronics has started mass production of a new type of memory chip for mobile devices, LPDDR3, that will dramatically increase performance in future smartphones and tablets, it said Tuesday. The new memory, which meets a standard published in May, will allow future devices to play high-definition video in real time on larger mobile screens than is currently possible, Samsung said. The new RAM will allow data rates of 12.8GBps, much faster than the current generation of mobile RAM, which usually transfers at 8.5GBps. Read More

Winklevoss twins invest $1m in new social network SumZero
Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, best known for their epic legal battle with Mark Zuckerberg over ownership rights to Facebook, have reportedly invested $1 million (£620,000) in a new social network aimed at the financial community, called SumZero. Founded by fellow Harvard alumni Divya Narendra and Aalap Mahadevia in 2008, SumZero has about 7,500 members. The network enables users to get advice from other investors, and spread the word about investments they have made. Read More
