Oracle has been good to Java, despite early fears
Despite fears that Oracle would not be the ideal shepherd for Java, the platform has benefited since Oracle took over in early 2010, says IDC analyst Al Hilwa. Such fears led Java founder James Gosling to depart Oracle not long after the company transitioned from Sun. "Many of the fears of the broader Java community have not materialized," said Hilwa. "Oracle has navigated most decisions with a deliberate and decisive approach that should inspire the community's confidence in Java's long-term prospects." Read More

ITU seeks public input on the future of Internet regulation

Lenovo's profit up 30 percent, mobile business unit continues to grow
Chinese PC maker Lenovo said on Thursday that net profit in its fiscal first quarter ended June 30 grew by 30 percent year-over-year, as the company inched closer toward surpassing HP to become the top vendor in the market. Lenovo's net profit reached $141 million in the quarter, up from $108 million in the same period a year ago. The company's revenue in the quarter was at $8 billion, a year-over-year increase of 35 percent. Read More

U.S. loses fight to keep tight hold on Megaupload evidence
The U.S. government lost a bid on Thursday to withhold some evidence in advance of the extradition hearing for four Megaupload defendants charged with criminal copyright infringement. The United States had asked for a judicial review following a New Zealand District Court ruling on May 29 ordering it to turn over some evidence to allow the four -- Kim Dotcom, Finn Batato, Mathias Ortmann, and Bram Van Der Kolk -- to prepare for the hearing.
