Red Hat users pay up to run Fedora on Windows 8 machines
Users seeking to run Red Hat Fedora on a Windows 8-certified computer may be forced to shell out $99 to bypass Microsoft's new UEFI Secure Boot feature, according to Red Hat Linux developer Matthew Garrett. That, he said, is the best compromise the company could devise to ensure users could easily load Fedora on new PCs without giving itself an unfair edge over less-influential Linux vendors. Jira 5.1 will focus on scalability for enterprise clients
Atlassian, makers of the Jira project- and issue-tracking system for software development, is emphasizing enterprise accommodations with recent and planned advancements. According to Atlassian co-CEO Mike Cannon-Brookes, Jira dominates in enterprises. "Nine out of 10 Fortune 10 companies use Jira," he said at the Atlassian Summit conference in San Francisco. Responding to large enterprises, Atlassian recently began offering dedicated enterprise support and interactive user training, company officials noted. Microsoft previews new versions of Visual Studio and .Net
Closely following its preview release of Windows 8, Microsoft has also posted a release candidate of its next version of the Visual Studio IDE (integrated development environment), as well as release candidates of the .Net framework and the Visual Studio Team Foundation Server 2012 source-control software. Dell's new Latitude business laptops offer 32.7 hours battery life
Dell has announced Latitude business laptops with Intel's latest Core processors that can provide around 33 hours of battery life, but only when combined with attached battery packs. The new Latitude E-series laptops will come with screens ranging in size from 12.5 to 15.6 inches. The company achieved 32.7 hours of battery life on a Latitude E6430, which is a business laptop with a 14-inch screen and Intel's latest Core processor, code-named Ivy Bridge. Read More

Google files complaint over use of 'patent trolls' by Nokia and Microsoft
Google has asked European Union regulators to investigate alleged collusion between Nokia, Microsoft and so-called patent trolls. The same concerns have been shared with the authorities in the U.S., a Google spokesman said on Friday. "Nokia and Microsoft are colluding to raise the costs of mobile devices for consumers, creating patent trolls that side-step promises both companies have made. They should be held accountable, and we hope our complaint spurs others to look into these practices," said Google in an official statement. Read More

Chrome steals second from Firefox in browser wars
Google's Chrome passed Mozilla's Firefox in May to become the world's second-most-popular browser, according to data released today by Web analytics company Net Applications. The California-based firm was the second major metric company to track Chrome's run to second. In November 2011, Irish measurement vendor StatCounter said Chrome had passed Firefox in its estimates.
