Microsoft to PC and tablet makers: You're not our future
Be careful what you ask for, you may just get it. For years, Dell has been complaining about the low-margin consumer market for PCs and trying to move away from it. Last year Hewlett-Packard pulled the plug on its grand ambitions to define a new computing platform that stretches from smartphones to PCs using the Palm WebOS operating system, then mused publicly about leaving the market entirely. With Microsoft's announcement yesterday that it will make its own Surface tablets running Windows 8, Dell may get its wish to leave the consumer market and HP may not have to figure out what role it wants PCs to play in its future. Eucalyptus returns to its open source roots
Since last year, Eucalyptus CEO Marten Mickos has acknowledged that his company hasn't done a great job in engaging and retaining support from the open source community. That's all changed now, according to Mickos: With today's release of Eucalyptus 3.1, the company has declared it's jettisoning separate enterprise and open source editions of its platform in favor of a single, open source option -- with the entire codebase freely available on GitHub. HP worried about an Oracle takeover after Hurd switched sides
Hewlett-Packard voiced concerns about Oracle attempting a hostile takeover after it hired former HP CEO Mark Hurd as co-president, Oracle's lead counsel told a judge on Monday. HP sued Hurd shortly after he went to Oracle in September 2010, and the two companies quickly tried to settle the dispute. One of HP's core demands was a "standstill" agreement blocking takeover bids by Oracle for a period of time, said Dorian Daley, Oracle's senior vice president, general counsel and secretary, a key player in the negotiations with HP. New Android malware disguised as security app
Google's Android mobile platform is the target of a new variant of a widely used malware capable of stealing personal information. The latest Zeus malware masquerades as a premium security app to lure people into downloading the Trojan, Kaspersky Lab reported Monday. The fake security app, called the Android Security Suite Premium, first appeared in early June with newer versions released since then. Read More

Cisco upgrades enterprise social network, renames it WebEx Social
Cisco Systems is extending the functionality of its Quad enterprise social networking (ESN) software through integration with Microsoft Office applications and with email clients, including Microsoft Outlook, the company is announcing on Tuesday. Cisco is also re-branding the ESN software, dropping its Quad name and calling it WebEx Social, as the company seeks to give its social collaboration products a uniform brand using the WebEx name.
