Torvalds disses overzealous OpenSuse security
Linux creator Linus Torvalds last week posted a searing rant to Google+ hammering the developers of OpenSuse for "mentally diseased" security measures. Requiring users to provide an admin password to make even minor changes like adding a new wireless network or changing the time zone is "moronic and wrong," according to the open-source guru. The furious article was apparently prompted by Torvald's daughter running into these security issues at school. Read More

Microsoft open sources Mayhem Windows scripting tool
Microsoft has released as open source a program that helps users link different Windows applications in a single workflow. The program, called Mayhem, has been donated to the Outercurve Foundation. Developed by Microsoft's applied sciences research group, Mayhem allows people with no programming skills to link together different Windows programs to carry out tasks across programs. Read More

Sony division drops AWS, goes OpenStack
The division of Sony that suffered a cyber attack last year, which led to a major PlayStation network outage and sensitive customer data being compromised, has dropped Amazon Web Services for at least a portion of its cloud hosting and computing in favor of an OpenStack platform hosted by Rackspace.
