The iPhone is a very good device right out of the box. You could be happy with just the Safari web browser, email application, and Google Maps.

But if you want to make it a great device, you need to hit up the App Store as soon as you've set up the basics of the iPhone.

Apple has over 500,000 iPhone apps, so visiting the App Store for the first time can be a daunting experience.

Lucky for you, we exist. After years of using an iPhone, and testing dozens of apps, we've come up with a list of the best apps.

If you just got a brand new iPhone, or you've had your iPhone for years, this collection of apps will turn a very good gadget into a truly great one.

The Facebook app is very good

Odds are you're on Facebook. And odds are, despite what you might say in public, you really like Facebook. It's a good way to keep up with friends. The Facebook app for the iPhone is very good.

Instagram is a great photo app and social network

Want to make your photos look faded? Want to make them look blurry on the edges? Want to see a bunch of cool photos from your friends? Then you want to get Instagram, it's a great photo app.

Drop iTunes and the "Music" App for Spotify

If you buy 10 albums a year or more, then getting Spotify for your iPhone is a no-brainer. It gives you access to unlimited music for $10 a month. (Some of us can remember spending $40 a week for a few albums, so this is a freaking steal.)

One drawback to Spotify: It's awful at organizing your favorite albums or artists. If you want an alternative, try MOG, which offers the same $10/month deal for all you can eat.

You can try each out for free for a little bit to see which you like best. We lean towards Spotify because more of our friends use it.
