Today, game developers are restricted to in-app payments or app purchases to make money. A game developer like Epic Games could now charge $10 a month for a super high-quality game, like Infinity Blade, instead of a high up-front purchase cost. Apple just opened up a whole new way for games to make money, but it's unclear how popular it will be. Aside from World of Warcraft, a popular online game with more than 10 million subscribers, subscription-based games are dying left and right. Many subscription games like City of Heroes, Lord of the Rings Online and Dungeons & Dragons Online have been forced to switch to a revenue model based off virtual good sales to survive.
