Broken Or Lost iPhone? Here's How To Transfer All Your Stuff To A New One

It's simple, really.

As long as you've recently backed up your iPhone using iTunes, you should be all set to make your new iPhone look exactly like the old one.

All of your apps, notes, emails, pictures, and songs are saved. This is part of the reason it takes so long to sync your iPhone with your computer.

Some days we are thankful for the endless "Finishing Sync" bar.

Your iPhone automatically backs itself up every time you sync, but to be extra sure, right click your iPhone in iTunes' navigation pane and click "Back Up."

When you plug in another iPhone, blank slate or not, all you need to do is right click it in iTunes' navigation menu and click "Restore." Once you click Restore, click the most recent Backup you have on file of your lost iPhone.

If you plug in another iPhone into your computer, it might even prompt you to restore it using the data from your old iPhone. See below for a picture:

Once you click "Continue" or "Restore," iTunes will load all of your preferences and files onto your new iPhone so it acts and looks exactly like the old one.

The method is identical for iPod Touch and for iPad, and if the device is new and 3G, iTunes will also prompt you to activate the device during this process.

One more thing: if your iPhone isn't backing up, or if the "Backup" option isn't present when you right click your device, open up Terminal and enter in

defaults write com.apple.iTunes DeviceBackupsDisabled -bool false

This script will restore backup capability to your iPhone.
